I've found that smaller...I agree with Maggie... I've found that smaller needles and denser thicker knitting makes for much more comfortable hand knit socks. I try to get @ 2 more stitches to the inch than the gauge listed on the ball band, and have been much happier with the comfort leve... And when they're knit tighter, they wear better and last longer!
